Baseball Falls To South Florida 12-4

TAMPA, Fla. - Outfielder Mike Barclay went two for two with a home run and four runs batted in to lead South Florida to a 12-4 victory over the University of Massachusetts baseball team. The Minutemen fall to 1-1 on the season with the loss, while the Bulls improve their record to 5-7 overall.
South Florida jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, with Barclay and designated hitter Chris Cuccia both hitting RBI singles, and first baseman Ronnie Handley adding an RBI double. The Bulls added eight more runs in the bottom of the second, with the key hits being a three-run homer by Barclay and a two-run single by Cuccia. South Florida scored one more run in the third to take a 12-0 lead on a solo home run by catcher Devin Ivany.
UMass scored all four of its runs in the top of the sixth inning to conclude the scoring. Sophomore catcher Anthony Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) knocked in the first run with an RBI double, while senior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) had an RBI single. Junior first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) and junior third baseman John Seed (New Bedford, Mass.) also drove in runs with ground balls.
Freshman lefthander Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) took the loss in the first appearance of his collegiate career, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits in one-plus innings pitched. Senior righthander Brian Hourigan (Beacon Falls, Conn.) tossed three shutout innings of relief, while freshman righthander Neil Scheller (Westfield, Mass.) threw one shutout inning. John Uhl earned the victory for South Florida, lasting six innings without allowing an earned run.
UMass returns to action tomorrow, March 3, when it plays South Florida at 1:00 p.m. in the rubber game of the weekend series.
