WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The UMass baseball team wrapped up its season opening weekend with a 25-4 rout of Fairfield at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Sunday, pounding out 20 hits, including five doubles, a program single game record four triples and two homeruns. With the win, the Minutemen move to 2-1 on the year, while the Stags drop to 0-1.

UMass managed two runs in the first, however, Fairfield answered back with a pair in the bottom half of the frame to tie the score. The Minutemen later regained the lead, 4-2 ,with two in the fourth and then broke the game open with an 11-spot in the fifth . The squad followed up with seven in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Sophomore Peter Copa was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and led the way for UMass with a squad-best six RBI, along with a double and a triple. Senior Adam Tempesta hit 2-for-7 with four RBI, a double and a triple. Junior Brian Baudinet belted a homerun and totaled four RBI and junior Austin Weymouth posted a 3-for-5 performance with two RBI and a homer. Junior Mike Donato and senior Jim Macdonald each had three hits and an RBI apiece as Donato was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple and Macdonald went 3-for-4 with a double. Junior Mike Gedman contributed two hits (2-for-2), logging a triple and an RBI.

Senior Mike Dicato picked up the victory (1-0) on the mound for the Minutemen, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Rob Gariano suffered the setback (0-1) for the Stags.



UMass will be back in action next Friday evening when the team will head west to Tucson, Ariz., to play its first of a three-game series against Arizona. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
