WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The UMass baseball team kicked off its 2009 schedule on Friday morning with a 4-3 win over Northwestern at the RussMatt Central Florida Invite. Twelve hits by the Minutemen (1-0) along with a two-run homer in the second inning from Sam Boone propelled the squad to its first victory in a season opener since 2004. The Wildcats are 1-4 on the year following the setback.

Senior Mitchell Eilenberg (1-0) earned the win against Northwestern after pitching 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and no runs, striking out two and walking only one of the 11 batters he faced. Junior right-hander Jared Freni started the game and threw six complete innings for the Minutemen, giving up only one hit and one unearned run in the fifth, striking out three. Geoff Rowan (0-1) got the loss for the Wildcats after 1.2 innings of action on the mound, giving up two hits and a run with no strikeouts.

The Minutemen got out to an early lead in the second after first baseman Peter Copa got hit by a pitch and was quickly brought home when Boone knocked one out of the park. Neither team would score again until the fifth when Northwestern's Chad Noble made it home on an error after reaching with a walk.

UMass would soon extend their lead in the seventh with singles from Kyle Multner, Brian Baudinet, and Austin Weymouth. Multner was the first on board and took advantage of the open space in front of him as he made it all the way around to third on a single from Baudinet and was knocked in with another single from Weymouth.

The Wildcats tied the score in the seventh as Noble scored for the second time after reaching on the first of three UMass errors that inning, but the Minutemen took the game back as Mike Gedman pinch hit for catcher Tom Conley and had a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Mike Donato who reached on a double earlier in the inning.

Senior second baseman Adam Tempesta led the Minutemen at the plate as he went 3-4 on the day while Weymouth and Donato both went 2-5 and Weymouth had one RBI. The Wildcats had four players with one hit apiece while Kenneth Avila and Trevor Steven each had an RBI.

The Minutemen will return to the field Saturday, Feb. 28 as they will face Northeastern in their second of three games at the RussMatt Central Florida Invite. The game will begin at 11:30 a.m.
