    Charles Bare
    Interim Media Relations Director

    Charles Bare is currently serving as the interim media relations director for the UMass athletic department, a position which he assumed in September of 2003. He oversees all public relations activities, information services and publications for the athletic department.

    Bare has been at UMass since the fall of 1998, serving as assistant media relations director. He handles all publicity for the Minuteman football team, and worked with the squad during its run to the 1998 Division I-AA national title. His 2000, 2001 and 2003 football media guides were rated the nation’s second-best in Division I-AA, while his 2002 football guide placed fifth nationally. Bare has also worked with the UMass basketball and baseball teams, while supervising the media relations activities for a number of other sports.

    Prior to his time at UMass, Bare spent two years as assistant sports information director at the University of Virginia, working with the Cavaliers’ men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming, and baseball teams. During his time at Virginia, Bare handled the publicity for two national players of the year in men’s soccer — Mike Fisher (1996) and Ben Olsen (1997). He also assisted with game day operations for Virginia’s basketball, football and lacrosse teams. Bare previously worked at UMass from 1994-1996, spending two years as an intern in the media relations office.

    A member of the College Sports Information Directors of America, the Football Writers Association of America and the United States Basketball Writers Association, Bare served as media coordinator for the 2003 NCAA field hockey championship, and the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 1996 men’s soccer championship and 1998 men’s and women’s swimming championships. He was also an assistant media coordinator for the 1995 NCAA women’s volleyball championship, and has worked on the official statistics crew for the NCAA men’s lacrosse and women’s volleyball championships. In addition, Bare served as national coordinator of Division I men’s soccer statistics from 1996-1997, and has been a color analyst on radio broadcasts of baseball games at UMass and Virginia.

    Bare graduated summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1994. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a concentration in business administration, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Bare is single and resides in Sunderland.
