SAAC Aims To Make The Holidays A Bit Brighter For Shriners Kids
Dec. 5, 2006
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is sponsoring the annual Toys For Tots program, supporting children of Shriners Hospital in Springfield, Mass. SAAC will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for kids ages 3-15 during the hockey game between No. 16 UMass and No. 6 Boston College this Friday, December 8.
"The toy drive has always been a great way for our student-athletes to get involved," said SAAC advisor Pete Montague. "They're hoping the campus and Western Mass. community is willing to open their hearts and match their efforts this season."
This is the third-straight year that the student-athletes have sponsored the toy drive to benefit Shriners Hospital. SAAC members will be collecting at the three entrances inside of the Mullins Center and will take a group of student-athletes to Shriners on December 13 to deliver the toys and visit the children. Last year, over 400 toys were collected and donated to the worthy cause, and the competition is stiff among the teams to see how many toys the student-athletes can donate. The goal is to fill a UMass Athletics van.
"This is one of the most rewarding events that the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee participates in because they know they are doing something great for children," said Montague. "The feeling our student-athletes get from interacting with the children is priceless. The folks at Shriners Hospital do unbelievable things for those kids."
