Oral Bullen, Brandon Smith Honored As UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes of the Week
Sept. 6, 2005
AMHERST, Mass. - Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.), a senior forward on the men's soccer team, and Brandon Smith (Bayonne, N.J.), a junior defensive back on the football squad, have been named Co-UMass/ Dinn Brothers Athlete of the Week after playing instrumental in their respective teams' victories over the weekend.
Bullen had an outstanding trip to Michigan as the Minutemen competed in the Michigan State/Radisson Fall Classic. On Monday, Bullen scored the game-wining goal, and provided the assist on another, in the Minutemen's 3-1 victory over previously undefeated Michigan. The goal was Bullen's 20th career score. On Sunday against Michigan State, Bullen scored a goal to tie the game at 1-1 midway through the second half, but the Minutemen eventually lost 2-1 on a goal late in the game.
Smith, the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week, played a large role in the Minutemen's 19-6 win over Richmond on Saturday. Smith, who had two interceptions on the day, hauled in his first career pick midway through the second quarter and returned it 29 yards. Trailing 16-6 in the fourth quarter, the Spiders were marching deep into UMass territory when Smith intercepted his second pass of the game at the UMass three-yard line. Smith returned the interception 55 yards, which set up a 31-yard Armando Cuko (Beverly, Mass.) field goal.
The two student-athletes will be honored at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon at Noon on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The event will be held in Room 1009 of the Campus Center. Head football coach Don Brown and head field hockey coach Patty Shea will be the guest speakers.
