Sacred Heart Eliminates Cornell, 3-1, Advances To Face UMass

AMHERST, Mass. - Sacred Heart's Taylor Froelich set the tone with a leadoff home run to straightaway center field and the Pioneers would not look back as the NEC Champions eliminated Cornell with a 3-1 win on Saturday in the NCAA Amherst Regional at the UMass Softball Complex. Jen Russell impressed with a strong seven inning performance as Sacred Heart now looks ahead to a showdown with the UMass Minutewomen at 7:40 p.m. with the winner advancing to Championship Sunday.
Russel's final line stood at seven innings allowing five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts. Shannon McCoy was 2-for-3, including a two run single in the third to extend Sacred Heart's lead. Jasmin Vincente also hit 2-for-3.
Cornell pitcher Elizabeth Dalrymple pitched six inning s allowing three runs (all earned) with seven hits and three strikeouts. Five different Big Red had hits, led by Jessy Berkey's solo home run to account for the team's only run.
Sacred Heart's lead extended to 3-0 in the third inning when McCoy's single to left-center field drove in Courtney Lee and pinch runner Sarah Stack. Lee and Amanda Bradley opened the inning with singles, but Dalrymple retired Betsy Harvey and Adrian Fitzsimon to set the stage for McCoy's two-out heroics.
Cornell cut the score to 3-1 with a Berkey solo home run to left field, but Russell held the Big Red without a run in the final three innings to hold onto the victory.
