AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Athletic Department will honor five Minutemen and Minutewomen who have excelled in the classroom, on the playing fields and in the community during National Student-Athlete Day on Sunday, April 6. Joe Calvello and Reed Goodhue from the men's lacrosse program, tennis' Chanel Glasper and Yuliana Motyl and Maggie Curran of the rowing squad will be recognized.

National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. NCAA involvement began in 1994 and those who are chosen by their respective coaches to be honored are given a recognition certificate from the NCAS.

Over 500 student-athletes from the University of Massachusetts 21 varsity programs took part in one or more community service activities during the last academic year - visiting 25 different service sites.

Much of this activity included engagement with youth organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Special Olympics, the Holyoke Boys and Girls Club, and many local elementary schools. Interaction between the student-athletes and the youth included reading, working on homework, playing sports, and an overall spirit of mentoring. Other events that benefitted the local community included food drives for the Hadley Food Pantry and Amherst Survival Center, the Trash to Treasures furniture sale, a walk for the Jimmy Fund, and visits to the Amherst Senior Center and nursing homes.

The NCAA gives financial assistance and administrative support to the NCAS by providing colleges and universities with nomination forms for the Giant Steps awards and other pertinent materials to promote National Student-Athlete Day.
