Minutemen In Major League Lacrosse (2015 Season Wrap-Up)

The 2015 Major League Lacrosse season concluded with the championship game at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga., Saturday, Aug. 8. A group of UMass men's lacrosse alumni competed or coaches in the league during 2015. Below is a short overview of how each performed.

Jim Connolly - Had three goals and an assist for four points during two games played with the Boston Cannons ... Now owns 37 career goals with seven assists for 44 points in 25 games played.

Brett Garber - Florida Launch & Boston Cannons Attackman: Spent time on the rosters of the Florida Launch and Boston Cannons in 2015 but did not make an appearance ... Currently owns 43 points (26 goals, 14 assists) during 44 appearances since the 2007 MLL season.

Diogo Godoi - Boston Cannons Close Defenseman: Spent time on the Boston Cannons roster but did not make an appearance in 2015 ... Owns 29 career games played, during which he has picked up 36 groundballs.

Ryan Hollenbaugh - Boston Cannons Close Defenseman: Saw action in four games for the Boston Cannons but did not record statistics.

Ryan Izzo - Ohio Short-Stick Defensive Midfielder: Spent the season on the collegiate inactive list and did not make an appearance for the Machine.

Will Manny - Boston Cannons Attackman: Tied for the 10th-most points across MLL with 44 on 28 goals (one two-pointer) and 15 assists in 12 appearances ... Assisted Boston in reaching the 2015 MLL playoffs, where the team fell to eventual-champion New York in the semifinals ... Owns 126 career points (78 goals, 47 assists) over three completed professional seasons.

Jack Reid - Boston Cannons Close Defenseman: Started the season with the Boston Cannons but did not make an appearance ... Has 157 groundballs with 13 points (eight goals, five assists) over 92 career appearances.

Kyle Smith - Boston Cannons Attackman: Made one appearance in 2015 but did not record statistics.

Tim Soudan - Rochester Rattlers Head Coach: Led his team to an 8-6 regular season finish and an appearance in the 2015 MLL Championship Game. Soudan guided the team to wins in four of its final five games entering the championship appearance, including a 12-8 comeback win over Ohio in the playoff semifinals.

Men's Lacrosse Alum Kyle Smith Joins Merrimack Coaching Staff

UMass men's lacrosse alumnus Kyle Smith (2010-13) joined the coaching staff at Merrimack, as announced by the college on Monday. Smith poured in 125 points via 79 goals and 46 assists over four seasons with the Minutemen and currently plays for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse. Recaps: UMass Wins Senior Night Contest With Delaware, 16-8

UMass men's lacrosse defended Garber Field with the Blue Hens of Delaware in town on Friday night, putting together a complete performance to double-up the visitors, 16-8 in front of 1,623 fans. Kyle Smith earned a career-high nine points (6 goals, 3 assists) while classmate and fellow starting attackmen Will Manny earned seven more (4 goals, 3 assists) to pace the offense. On the other end of the field, seniors Ryan Hollenbaugh and Jake Smith combined for six groundballs and five caused turnovers to lead an even-paced UMass defense that did not allow Delaware more than two goals in any individual quarter.

With the win, UMass remains in contention for the final seed in the CAA Tournament, needing Penn State to defeat Hofstra and Towson to claim victory over Saint Joseph's on Saturday in order to secure a postseason berth. AMHERST -- For generation after generation, lacrosse has been a family affair in the Smith family.
The Smith family's love of lacrosse began with Neville, a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and continued on down to his son Norm. Now, that love has spread to Norm's son, Kyle, a senior attackman for the University of Massachusetts Amherst men's lacrosse team.
It was apparent from a young age that the family's lacrosse gene would not skip a generation. Kyle picked up a lacrosse stick and never let it go.

Recaps From Men's Lacrosse Win Over No. 11 Ohio State

Colin Fleming and Kyle Smith each scored three goals, but it was the defense that stood tall allowing just one Buckeye goal in the final three quarters of play as No. 8 UMass won at No. 11 Ohio State on Saturday. Tim McCormack was outstanding in goal making a season-high 11 saves and allowing the season-low three goals. The Minutemen will return to action on Saturday afternoon at Brown.

Republican: Feature On Lacrosse's Kyle Smith

After a disappointing month of March, the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team needed to turn the page, so coach Greg Cannella held his own version of show and tell.

"He ripped up the March page off the calendar and told us there were five games left in the season," recalled sophomore attack Kyle Smith of Longmeadow, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime in last Saturday's 9-8 win at Towson.

And now it's a three-game season for the Minutemen, who are 7-3 and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association entering Saturday's huge conference clash against Drexel (6-5, 2-2) at Garber Field at 1 p.m.
