While many of you were sleeping, UMass hockey picked up its first victory in a Hockey East Tournament win since 2009, defeating Notre Dame in Game 1 of the best-of-three opening round series, 4-3 in 5OT, the longest hockey game in NCAA Division I history.

Last night at the Mullins Center, the Minutemen collected some valuable Hockey East points, battling for a 6-4 win over New Hampshire, which included some heroics from reigning Hockey East player of the Week Shane Walsh who had a pair of third period goals. Dick Baker spoke to UMass hockey sophomore forward Shane Walsh this week ahead of the Minutemen's first Hockey East trip to Notre Dame:

His Irish eyes are smiling.

University of Massachusetts sophomore forward Shane Walsh says he's just about all Irish, so he's looking forward to the weekend set at Notre Dame.

"My parents are both Irish, and maybe I've got a little bit of Welsh in me," Walsh said.

The Minutemen and Fighting Irish meet Friday night at 7:35, and Saturday night at 6:35 at the Family Compton Ice Arena.

The Bud Light UMass Hockey Radio Show returns this Tuesday, Jan. 8, and will be broadcast live from Fathers & Sons in West Springfield starting at 7 p.m. on WHMP (AM 1400/1240/FM 96.9), also available streaming online and via the TuneIn app.
