John Griffin and Jonathan Hernandez are expected to get the bulk of the carries for UMass this season, but don't sleep on Jamar Smith. Smith is a redshirt freshman. He switched his jersey to number 5 this season. His number at Binghamton high school. UMass running back great Steve Baylark and Marcel Shipp both wore number 5. In his latest update on UMass Football, Matt Vautour of the Daily Hampshire Gazette focuses in on the Minutemen's No. 5 in the backfield -- Jamar Smith. The last two tailbacks to wear No. 5 are All-Americans Steve Baylark and Marcel Shipp, who combined for 11,582 career yards. "All the tools are there. That's why he got the No. 5," UMass coach Kevin Morris said. "He's a guy that we think can make an impact."
Vautour also mentions the addition to Nick Speller and the brother combinations on the UMass roster.
