Collegian: Late third quarter surge leads UMass men's lacrosse past Hartford

Daily Collegian staff writer Andrew Cyr spoke with UMass men's lacrosse head coach Greg Cannella, midfielder Connor Mooney and attackman Nick Mariano after the Minutemen dispatched Hartford, 12-6. Check out Cyr's recap and what Cannella, Mooney and Mariano had to say below.

"Tied at 5-5 with three minutes, 18 seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Massachusetts men's lacrosse team found itself in another game that was destined to go down to the wire.

But sometimes in lacrosse, one goal is all it takes to jumpstart an offense. And on Saturday, the No. 11 Minutemen's late offensive explosion proved to be the key in their 12-6 win over Hartford.

Jeff George fired a shot at Hartford goalkeeper Frank Piechota that caught a piece of his stick and trickled out in front of the net. Then Ryan Curley - who hasn't made a huge impact on the scoresheet this season - was in the right place at the right time to give UMass the 6-5 lead.

The Minutemen never looked back, scoring six consecutive goals to quickly put the game out of reach midway through the fourth quarter."

The remainder of the recap is available through the Daily Collegian website. More on the men's lacrosse team can be found on UMassAthletics.com.
