MBB Recaps From Wednesday's 78-65 Loss At St. Bonaventure

Here are some recaps from Wednesday's 78-65 loss at St. Bonaventure. The Minutemen appeared ready for another strong comeback when Trey Davis knocked down a three from the right win and brought UMass to with 55-54. But the Bonnies answered with a banked-in 3-pointer to ignite an 11-2 run and keep the Minutemen at bay. Trey Davis had a career-high 18 points.

Jesse Mayfield-Sheehan of the Daily Collegian checked in with UMass women's basketball head coach Sharon Dawley and junior guard Emily Mital ahead of the annual Field Trip Day game, hosted this year on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 11:45 a.m. against George Washington.

"Morning games typically mean smaller crowds for most sporting events.

But when the Massachusetts women's basketball team hosts George Washington on Wednesday morning, it will be expecting a larger crowd than usual as hundreds of children from local elementary schools come out for the team's annual Field Trip Day game.

On Field Trip Day, students in kindergarten through eighth grade can come to the game for free, resulting in a big turnout from the local schools..."

Check out the rest of Mayfield-Sheehan's story through the Daily Collegian website. More information on the women's basketball program is available on UMassAthletics.com.

NY Times: Past Glories Resound in UMass Revival

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Zach Schonbrun of the New York Times stopped by campus a couple of weeks ago and spent some time with coach Kellogg and some members of the university and basketball program. His story was published in today's paper.

AMHERST, Mass. -- Shortly after Derek Kellogg was hired at Massachusetts in the summer of 2008, he toured the surrounding countryside, popping into restaurants, coffee shops and bars across the Pioneer Valley to shake hands, and to promote and reminisce about the Minutemen.
He was a local product who had starred at UMass under Coach John Calipari during its heyday in the mid-1990s, back when Mullins Center rocked and N.B.A. scouts routinely visited. His sanguine message to the community in 2008 was that he could bring those days back.
It was, Kellogg reflected recently, "a tough sell." Fans had a right to seem skeptical. After Calipari left for the Nets in 1996, the program tumbled, cycling through three coaches in 12 years while reaching the N.C.A.A. tournament only twice. Recruiting dried up and attendance dipped, ranking 92nd in the nation in 2007, with fewer than 6,000 fans a game.
Kellogg slicked his hair back like Calipari, and he seemed to breathe the same fire on the sideline, but his early results at UMass were mediocre at best. It was difficult to shut out the negativity; already, there was grumbling that another coaching change was necessary. The administration, though, stuck with him.

MBB Recaps From Sunday's 90-52 Win Over Fordham

It was a wonderful day at the Mullins Center on Sunday as No. 13/12 UMass defeated Fordham 90-52 in the most lopsided game in the series history. The regular rotation did what they had to do in taking apart the Rams defensively and capitalizing on the offensive end. And the freshmen saw considerable playing time and made numerous strong plays. Next up are a couple of big road game at St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's. The Bona game is not available on TV, just the Atlantic 10 Digital Network web stream. The Saint Joe's game is a 6 p.m. start on the CBS SN this Saturday.

Jim Fenton of The Enterprise wrote a story covering Julie (Ready) Mulvey, who is one of six University of Massachusetts alums set to be inducted into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame on Sunday. Ready competed for the UMass women's basketball team from 1978-81 and recorded all-America honors as she earned 1,406 career points for the Minutewomen.

"Massasoit Community College director of athletics Julie (Ready) Mulvey will receive a special honor this weekend.

Mulvey will be one of six people inducted into the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Athletics Hall of Fame on Sunday afternoon.

The Whitman-Hanson Regional High School graduate was one of the top women's basketball players at UMass, scoring 1,406 points from 1978-81, earning Division 1 All-America honors and being nominated twice for the national player of the year award..."

Read the conclusion of Fenton's article through paper's website here. More information on the Minutewomen is available on UMassAthletics.com.

It's probably been barely noticed, but when analyzing the reasons for the 6-15-3 record of the University of Massachusetts hockey team, the strength of its schedule is a contributing factor.

Even including the home loss to American International Jan. 14, the Minutemen's strength of schedule is ranked fifth nationally of all 59 Division I teams. They trail only New Hampshire, with the strongest slate, followed by Minnesota, Notre Dame, and Minnesota-Duluth in the latest Ratings Percentage Index as posted by U.S. College Hockey Online.

Additionally, UMass has played 15 of its 24 games away from the Mullins Center. Its home mark is 3-5-1, but 3-9-1 on the road, and 0-1-1 on neutral ice (UConn Hockey Classic).

"We're never going to make excuses, but we're pretty battled- tested for this time of year," UMass coach John Micheletto said.

The tournaments, the nonconference games and the exhibitions are over.

For the next five weeks, beginning Friday and going until the end of the regular season, the University of Massachusetts will play nine games, all against conference foes, to determine its position in March's Hockey East tournament.

It starts with this weekend's home-and-home series with Merrimack -- Friday at the Mullins Center, Saturday at Lawler Arena in North Andover. Both games are at 7 p.m.

"We've been stressing every time out, no matter who we play, at home or on the road, every league game matters," UMass coach John Micheletto said. "We've tried to create that sense of urgency without creating a sense of panic. The difference is there's nothing but league games mixed in the rest of the way. There's a sprint to the finish line mentality, but I don't know that we're looking at it as any more important or less important than we have with games in the past."

UMass senior co-captain Conor Sheary said the Minutemen will be looking to make a push up the Hockey East standings as they begin their nine-game stretch run with a home-and-home series vs. Merrimack tomorrow in Amherst.

"Well, we've obviously had a few rough patches throughout the season. . . . Right now, we have all league games left, so that's what we're focusing on."

Cameron McDonough had this preview in today's Daily Collegian ahead of UMass' pair of games against Merrimack this weekend. The Minutemen host the Warriors on Friday before traveling to North Andover for Saturday's matchup.
Nick Canelas had this piece in today's Daily Collegian on former UMass defenseman Conor Allen in his first full season of professional hockey:

It was just an ordinary Friday night.

Conor Allen was sitting on the couch in his Hartford, Conn., home, playing cards with a group of friends, when he received a phone call from an unfamiliar number around 10:30 p.m.

He answered suspiciously. Initially, he thought it was a prank call because he didn't recognize the voice on the other end. That mystery voice actually belonged to Ken Gernander, Allen's coach for the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack.

Gernander wasn't just looking to chat, however. He had with him the most exciting news of the 23-year-old's hockey career: Allen was being called up to the New York Rangers.

Next thing he knew, he was on a flight to Washington, D.C., where the Rangers played the Capitals that night, to meet his new teammates.

"It was a weird feeling knowing I was getting called up," Allen said. "You try not to think about it. Everyone just tells you to take care of business in the AHL and if you do that the NHL will figure itself out.

Derek Kellogg On Tim Brando Show This Morning

Head basketball coach Derek Kellogg will be a guest on the Tim Brando Show this morning. He is scheduled to go on around 10:15 am Eastern time. The show airs on CBS Sports Network from 9 am-Noon.

Scott Gleeson (@ScottMGleeson), a national college hoops writer for USA Today wrote a nice story on the basketball program and what coach Kellogg goes through to maintain the success throughout the season. He also spent some time with Chaz and got his thoughts on how he is the engine that makes the team go, and how his teammates feed off his energy.

Kentucky coach John Calipari has watched former player and assistant coach Derek Kellogg grow -- like a proud parent. Kellogg, the Massachusetts point guard turned head coach, served on Calipari's staff at Memphis for nine seasons before taking over at his alma mater in 2008.
The way Calipari sees it, however, Kellogg's been a head coach for longer than he thinks.
"When he was a player, he never came off the floor. All the players loved him so much," Calipari told USA TODAY Sports by phone. "He's doing the same thing as a coach that made him such a great player. He's making everybody better."
Kellogg often turns to his mentor for words of wisdom, reaching out to him 4-5 times a week -- whether it be texts or long phone calls -- although recently he's been seeking more tactical advice.
One challenge Kellogg wasn't fully ready for as a head coach? Preparing his nationally ranked team to play with a target on its back. The Minutemen (16-1, 3-0) have exceeded expectations and are one of the country's most surprising success stories, vaulting to No. 12 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll on Monday. That's the highest ranking for the program since 1996 -- back when Calipari was still roaming the sidelines.

Women's Lacrosse Ranked No. 16 In Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Poll

As part of its preseason build-up, Lacrosse Magazine is releasing it's preseason Top 20 poll team-by-team. Last week, it ranked the UMass women's lacrosse team as No. 16 to start 2014. UMass is looking for its sixth consecutive A-10 title and another trip to the NCAA Tournament.

MBB Recaps From Saturday's 84-74 Win At Elon

No. 16/15 UMass led from wire to wire in a tough, but steady performance at Elon on Saturday night. Cady Lalanne controlled the paint and they didn't have an answer for the length of Maxie Esho and Raphiael Putney. And then you add Chaz doing most of his damage in the second half, and in the final 7-plus minutes as well. Now its back to Atlantic 10 play with a tough one at Richmond on Wednesday night.

They said it... Quotes from the press conferences
"It was a very good win for us on the road," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "I've got a lot of respect for Elon. This was a very good, tough, full 40 minutes for us. Going on the road and playing a good RPI game is always good if you're trying to be an NCAA tournament team. I was nervous coming in, I knew (Elon) could beat us. When they made a run, it was never like they took the game over. It was more along the lines like they were fighting to come back."
-- UMass head coach Derek Kellogg

"UMass is nationally recognized for a reason. I thought our guys played hard. I think we did not play as clean as we needed to offensively."
-- Elon coach Matt Matheny

"That's not the way you want to start. We want to be the team that punches the other team in the mouth and today we got punched. We were right there. Every time we got it to seven, they had an answer for us."
-- Elon senior guard Sebastian Koch

"This was definitely one of the longest teams we've played. In practice, we can't replicate exactly what they're going to do."
-- Elon senior forward Lucas Troutman

MBB Gameday Preview: at Elon, 1/18/14

UMass heads to the Piedmont region of North Carolina to face Elon Saturday night. The game marks the final regular-season non-conference game of the season. Check out head coach John Micheletto and redshirt-freshman Frank Vatrano's comments from yesterday's postgame press conference:

Dick Baker focused on local product Frank Vatrano in his recap of UMass' 5-2 win in the squad's exhibition matchup against the U.S. Under-18 Team on Sunday:

In computer science, there's a "five-minute rule" for deciding whether a data item should be kept in memory or stored on a disk.

If there was a five-minute rule to determine whether a player should become a distant memory, it would depend on how he handled hockey's version of the disk.

In his first unofficial game with the University of Massachusetts, Frankie Vatrano of East Longmeadow beat that clock by scoring at 4:01 of the first period Sunday to send the Minutemen off to a 5-2 exhibition win over the U.S. National Under-18 squad at the Mullins Center.

Read more: Just give him (less than) five minutes: Frankie Vatrano quickly earns rave reviews in first game for UMass hockey

Nick Canelas had coverage of UMass' 5-2 exhibition win over the U.S. Under-18 Team on Sunday and the unofficial debut of Frank Vatrano:

It was a day Frank Vatrano has looked forward to all season.

A redshirt freshman on the Massachusetts hockey team, Vatrano is ineligible to play in an official game until the 2014 Hockey East Tournament, but got his first taste of game action on Sunday when the Minutemen hosted the U.S. National Under-18 Team in an exhibition contest.

He made the most of it.

Vatrano scored a power-play goal and assist while playing on UMass' top forward line in a 5-2 win at Mullins Center.

It may have been an ordinary scrimmage for the rest of the Minutemen. But for Vatrano, it was relief. He's practiced with the Minutemen all season, but Sunday marked his first organized game since January 2013, meaning he could finally hit someone in another jersey.

"When you play against your teammates you don't wanna go so hard against them, you don't want to hurt them, but it was great," said Vatrano, who was a former player for the USA. "It felt like a college game to me because I remember when I was in their shoes playing against Michigan, Wisconsin, all those schools."

Men's Lacrosse: Manny Mentioned In MLL 2013 Draft Review

In anticipation of the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, which is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 10, MLL took a look back at some of the most successful players selected during the 2013 edition of the draft, among them Massachusetts men's lacrosse alum Will Manny.

The No. 14 selection of the draft (second round), Manny went to the Boston Cannons and provided 30 points on 18 goals and 12 assists in his first professional campaign. Find out who joined Manny to fill out the 2013 draft review here.

More information about Major League Lacrosse and the 2014 Collegiate Draft can be found here. The most up-to-date information on UMass men's lacrosse is available on UMassAthletics.com.

UMass Basketball In Friday's USA Today

USA TODAY Sports' Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) and Eric Prisbell (@EricPrisbell) catch you up on the teams, players and story lines that have marked this college basketball season so far. By now you probably know you're going to see some UMass mentions in the story... and you're right!

So here's what they said about the Minutemen...
TEAMS THAT ARE SURPRISINGLY STRONG
Mass: The Minutemen are No. 5 in the RPI largely because of 5-foot-9 guard Chaz Williams, a senior who averages 15.5 points and 7.7 rebounds. They have played the nation's 10th-toughest schedule, which is highlighted by no particularly weak non-league opponents.

They also make a mention of UMass and George Washington in their 'GLASS SLIPPER TEAMS'...
Speaking of the A-10, both UMass and George Washington have been pleasant surprises thus far. The Minutemen are ranked for the first time in 15 years, thanks to potential All-American candidate Chaz Williams. GW has found success in coach Mike Lonergan's third season by relying on a couple of smart transfer pickups - most notably, Maurice Creek and Isaiah Armwood.

MBB Recaps From Wednesday's 66-62 Win Over Saint Joseph's

UMass outscored Saint Joseph's 18-5 to close the game as the Minutemen improved to 13-1 on the season and 1-0 in Atlantic 10 play. Maxie Esho's steal and throw down dunk put the team ahead and then they had a pair of textbook defensive stops to come away with the victory.

Paul Gotham of the basketball web site Pickin Splinters wrote the following article on Derrick Gordon.
Gordon (2) has been a valuable piece to the UMass run. (Photo: Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports)
Derrick Gordon grabbed headlines recently. The redshirt sophomore's putback gave Derek Kellogg's then No. 22 UMass Minutemen a 69-67 victory over rival Providence. Gordon's bucket with 1.1 seconds left in overtime lifted UMass to consecutive last-second victories over the Friars.
The attention was overdue for a player who Kellogg insists is a key piece for the Minutemen who have the NCAA Tournament in their sights for the first time in more than a decade.
"He's a tough kind of role guy who will do everything for the team," Kellogg said during the weekly Atlantic 10 conference call. "Those types of guys are important. At times they don't get the recognition they deserve."

Michaela Butler making her mark at UMass

George Kostinas is a writer on Cape Cod who authored the following article on senior diver Michaela Butler.

It takes a special kind of person, a special kind of athlete, to compete at the highest level in any sport, and Michaela Butler of Dennisport is one of those.
Butler is finishing off a terrific diving career at the University of Massachusetts, in which she has broken every school record in the 1-meter dive, and some in the 3-meter dive, and is the school's first All-American in that sport.
Last spring, her junior year, Butler finished fourth in the NCAA championships, which made her an All-America selection.
To be named All-America one has to finish in the top eight at the NCAA championships.
"No swimmer or diver at UMass has ever done that, either male or female," said UMass diving coach, Mandy Hixon. "And the program has been going on for 78 years or something like that."
In addition, she finished 14th in the 3-meter dive, which was good enough for All-America honorable mention honors in that event.
And finally, Butler is in the midst of a three-year undefeated streak in dual meets that will probably continue as she closes out her senior year.
