Republican: UMass field hockey wins second straight A-10 championship


The University of Massachusetts field hockey squad wrapped up its second consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship with a 2-1 victory over Richmond at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. Jesse Mayfield Sheehan was at the game and has a recap of the action for MinuteFans.

Now that she's in her senior season, the playoffs no longer mean "do or die" for University of Massachusetts field hockey co-captain Hannah Prince. They now mean "do or your college career is over."

"It was an exciting day for us, knowing this could be my last game on Garber (Field)," Prince said.

But Prince's career isn't over yet, and the season isn't over for UMass, as the Minutewomen defeated Richmond again this year by a score of 2-1 to win their second straight A-10 Championship.

For UMass, it was the first set of back-to-back championships since the 2007 and 2008 seasons. For coach Carla Tagliente, it was her second championship in just three seasons with the team...
