Mark Chiarelli has this UMass Hockey preview in today's Daily Hampshire Gazette. The Minutemen open the 2013-14 campaign tonight at #19 Boston University.

If last year was a fresh start for the University of Massachusetts hockey team, this season centers on cultivating a system already put in place by second-year coach John Micheletto.

"We talked a lot over the last year about resilience and not having a lot of ups and downs," Micheletto said. "That's an easy thing to talk about and understand, but it's a hard thing to implement sometimes."

UMass hopes to build off a 12-19-3 season that saw victories over Boston College, Boston University and New Hampshire. The Minutemen also finished 2-7-1 over the final 10 games and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

The team returns 16 upperclassmen, including nine seniors, something Micheletto hopes will accelerate the growing process. The familiarity is already paying dividends as UMass prepares to open the season at Boston University at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
