Matt Whippen Tallies Two Weekly Awards For #12 Men's Lacrosse

UMass junior midfielder Matt Whippen earned a pair of weekly laurels after posting five goals and an assist in UMass' 16-9 season-opening victory over Army on Sunday afternoon - securing the CAA Player of the Week and UMass Co-Athlete of the Week honors on Monday. The awards mark the first for Whippen in his collegiate career.

During play against the Black Knights, Whippen notched his first collegiate point with the first Minuteman goal and went on to add three more during the decisive second and third quarters. After the teams tied at 4-4 through the first stanza, Whippen spearheaded the UMass offense with a trio of goals during the middle portion of the contest, in which the Minutemen built a 13-8 lead entering the final frame. The Chelmsford, Mass., native went on to add one more tally in the fourth before assisting Kyle Smith on the contest's final goal.

The Minutemen continue their season with a neutral-site contest at Kennesaw State University's KSU Stadium against No. 4 North Carolina at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16.
