The value of social networks at Isenberg and UMass Amherst took center stage at the campus's 2011 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on May 13 when Chancellor Holub recounted the story of David Hixson's high school class ring. Before the ring's recent rediscovery, Hixson '81, an Isenberg parent and senior manager with EMC in Franklin, had not seen it since 1977, when he lost it as a freshman at UMass Amherst.
In April, Hixson received a Facebook message from a current UMass Amherst senior--Paul Dainton, a psychology major. Dainton had stumbled upon the ring earlier this spring, after parking his auto on Sunset Avenue in Amherst. That's when he noticed a shiny object on the ground: a Marlboro High School 1977 class ring with the initials DH. Dainton turned to Facebook, where he tracked down its once and future wearer.
"Both my father and I attended and graduated UMass Amherst; my daughter, Kortney Hixson, will start at Isenberg in the fall," remarks Hixson. "I am happy to say there are still a lot of people of great integrity in this world-especially at UMass Amherst and Isenberg."
