•  UMass Football's Tyler Holmes Named Best Linebacker in FCS - Yahoo.

While 2011 will be the last year of competition in the FCS for the University of Massachusetts Minutemen, they'll be able to rely on outstanding players like Tyler Holmes as they take on conference opponents one last time. The Minutemen captain was recently named the single best linebacker in the entire FCS as the upcoming 2011 season approaches. UMass's last season as an FCS team will also be Holmes's senior year, and while he won't be with them when the Minutemen join the FBS-level MAC in 2012, you can bet he'll make this last season one to remember. Read more...

A finalist for the 2010 Buck Buchanan award, given to the best defensive player in the FCS, it's not hard to see why The Sports Network picked Holmes as the standout linebacker to watch in 2011. Holmes was not only an ECAC-FCS All Star, he was also named ECAC's top defensive player of the year after the 2010 season. It was one of many accolades the 6 foot tall, 220 pound LB has accumulated following what was undoubtedly a great year.

Holmes also shared the award for the conference's best defensive player for 2010 (along with Richmond's Eric McBride). He earned All-New England team honors, was an AP first team pick, as well as being named to the TSN and AFCA All American teams. Not only that, he was New England's Gold Helmet player of the year, the first UMass athlete to win the award since 1978.

Most importantly to UMass students and alumni like me, however, is the fact that he was the Minutemen MVP. Holmes was a clear standout in the 2010 season, racking up 5 sacks, 5 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and 110 tackles including 12 for loss. The star linebacker has been an essential part of UMass's defense, though he may be poised for a switch to the inside as new defensive coordinator Frank Forcucci takes the reins. There's no doubt that Holmes is a reliable star whose absence will definitely be felt when the team heads into MAC competition in the FBS in 2012.
