The 2011 UMass softball season came to a close in Charlotte over the weekend at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The No. 2 seeded Minutewomen, after receiving a first round bye, defeated No. 3 Saint Joseph's, 3-1 in the second round on Thursday before falling to No. 1 Fordham on Friday, 1-0 in 10 innings. UMass then faced the Hawks again on Friday night with the winner going on to face Fordham in the finals. With the score tied 2-2 going into the seventh inning, a thunderstorm forced the game to be suspended until Saturday morning, when St. Joe's scored four runs in the ninth to defeat the Minutewomen, 6-2.

The Minutewomen say goodbye and thank you to graduated seniors Audrey Boutin and Meghan Carta, but Elaine Sortino returns a talented young squad for 2012, including All-Conference performers Kyllie Magill, Cyndil Matthew, and Sara Plourde, in addition to a strong recruiting class.
