University of Massachusetts football coach Kevin Morris announced Monday the hiring of special teams coordinator Joe Tricario as part of the program's staff reorganization.
Tricario coordinated both the defense and special teams at Stony Brook last year. He had been on the Seawolves' staff since 2005. Before that he spent eight years at Fordham. Morris said he and Tricario have been friends for a long time.
"He's got extensive experience coordinating special teams. I've known him for 25 years," Morris said. "The expertise factor is first and foremost. From there, can you get someone you know who has that expertise. It was a perfect fit. You talk to anyone in the college coaching profession, it's not necessarily what you know, but who you know."
Tricario, who will also work with inside linebackers, replaces Steve Tirrell as the special teams coordinator. Tirrell, who also coaches the defensive line, is taking over the role of recruiting coordinator. He replaced Guido Falbo, who became the offensive coordinator at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
UMass also hired former Amherst College assistant coach Tyler Moody as an assistant linebackers coach.
HOLMES HONORED - The SportsNetwork.com, a website that covers Championship Subdivision extensively, named UMass senior-to-be Tyler Holmes its best linebacker in FCS football as part of its offseason look at the subdivision.
Holmes, who will be in his second year as captain in the fall, made 110 tackles and had five interceptions in 2010.
ALUMNI EVENTS - Morris will speak at Alumni Association events in Boston (May 17, 6 p.m. at the Colonnade Hotel) and New York City (May 26, 6 p.m., Professor Thom's).
Morris will hold a Q&A about the program's present and future at both events. Registration is required for either event through UMassalumni.com.
