The blog website GiantsGab.com has a feature on UMass alum Victor Cruz. Check it out Victor Cruz Player Profile.

There were two hundred and twenty-five players named called during the 2010 NFL draft. Not one of those names was Victor Cruz. He'd have to try and make it as an UDFA. Cruz received calls from many teams, but the UMass standout opted to sign with the Giants. He'd try and make the roster as a player not drafted something very difficult to do.

Player Profile: Victor Cruz

There were two hundred and twenty-five players named called during the 2010 NFL draft.  Not one of those names was Victor Cruz. He'd have to try and make it as an UDFA. Cruz received calls from many teams, but the U-Mass standout opted to sign with the Giants. He'd try and make the roster as a player not drafted something very difficult to do. The Giants' were loaded with WR's.  A first round pick from 2009 in Hakeem Nicks, a 2009 Pro-Bowler in Steve Smith, an emerging WR in Mario Manningham, a great potential player in Ramses Barden, and at the time, solid 4th receiver  and kick-off specialist Domenik Hixon. They also had solid special teams' player Derek Hagan as well. Cruz would be competing with Hagan and fellow UDFA Duke Calhoun for the remaining two WR slots (Hixon was placed on IR) after tearing his ACL). Cruz was a training-camp standout. You could find Victor Cruz making one handed, diving catches in the end-zone during camp, quickly becoming a favorite of QB Eli Manning. Cruz, the Patterson, New Jersey native had a career game against the Jets, catching three touchdown passes, leading the Giants' to beat their co-tenant rivals.

Cruz did what few could do. He made the roster as an UDFA. When injuries came down, Cruz would have a chance to make his mark on the team. However, after finding himself on the inactive list most of the time; Cruz would be placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Cruz would only play in three games this season.

Will Victor Cruz get a chance to crack the rotation this season?

2011 Season Out-Look:

With the uncertainty among all the injuries to the Giants' WR's, Cruz will have a chance to compete for playing time next season. Both Steve Smith (knee) and Ramses Barden (ankle) are coming of season-ending surgeries. You simply can't count on either of them (Barden more so cause he hasn't proven himself reliable yet). If Cruz can have another impressive summer, assuming there is football, he might very well be a productive player for the Giants. If not, he needs to continue to improve on special teams and become a reliable gunner. A fan favorite, he will still have to compete for a roster spot next season, but it seems the Giants like his potential and see him as a solid player.
