Basketball teams eager to play Minutemen in Springfield

The MassMutual Center's status as the home of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Association's men's basketball conference tournament has made it easier for the University of Massachusetts to schedule games at the Springfield facility.

Since UMass hired Derek Kellogg as coach, the Springfield native has expressed a desire to play one game a year in his hometown.

UMass has played an Atlantic 10 game there in each of the past three seasons, but beginning in December, the opponent there will likely be a MAAC foe.

In an attempt to get more comfortable in the building, MAAC teams are interested in playing the Minutemen there. UMass will play perennial MAAC power Siena at the MassMutual Center on Dec. 9 as part of a three-game series with the Albany, N.Y. school. The Springfield game will be considered a neutral-site game. The teams will play at Siena in 2012-13 and in Amherst in 2013-14.

UMass associate athletic director Tim Kenney said Tuesday there's been interest from other MAAC schools in scheduling games against the Minutemen in Springfield in future seasons.

BOSTON TIPOFF 2? - After playing Boston College in the Boston Tipoff Classic at the TD Garden last season, the annual meeting between Bay State rivals is moving back to Chestnut Hill. But the Minutemen could still be part of the Classic again next season. Event organizers are exploring another doubleheader featuring two New England teams, including potentially UMass, each playing against a big six conference opponent.

CAGE GAME 2 - Kenney said there will be another regular season game at Curry Hicks Cage following the success of last year's game against Holy Cross in the old gym. The date, opponent and time aren't yet set.

GURLEY IN PORTSMOUTH - Former Minuteman guard Anthony Gurley struggled shooting the ball in last week's Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. He averaged 7.0 points per game in three games, making 8-of-28 shots while missing all seven 3-point attempts.

CAMP KELLOGG - Kellogg's annual summer camp for kids will have two sessions. The Satellite Camp at the Alice Beal School in Springfield is for players in grades 5-8 and runs from July 11-14.

The Day Camp for youngsters ages 8-18 runs from Aug. 1-4 at UMass.
