AMHERST - Army shocked the collegiate lacrosse world last spring when the Patriot League champions upset Syracuse, then the two-time defending national champions, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

So the territorial domination displayed by the University of Massachusetts Saturday is very encouraging.

The No. 16 Minutemen unloaded 50 shots at the Army goal en route to an 8-5 victory over No. 12 Army before 1,308 at chilly Garber Field in the season opener for both teams.

The game was more lopsided than the final score. Army goaltender Tom Palesky was outstanding, making 18 saves. UMass goaltender Tim McCormack needed to stop only nine shots. UMass picked up 27 ground balls, Army only 17.

"Obviously as an opener, we couldn't be happier with the effort the guys gave, the preparation they put into it, the effort they gave, the intensity that they brought for 50 minutes," UMass coach Greg Cannella said.

The Minutemen dominated the first quarter outshooting Army 20-2, and didn't allow the Black Knights to gain possession until after four minutes and 15 seconds. McCormack needed to make only one save. Palesky kept the score to 2-0 by making seven saves. Colin Fleming and Mike Fetterly had the goals.

The start of the second quarter was much different with Army scoring two quick goals to tie the game. But with 11:11 left, Army defender Brendan Buckley put one in his own net. He was trying to flip the ball to Palesky, who wasn't ready.

Ryan Hantverk made it 4-2 for UMass with 9:43 left with Army's Jeremy Boltus answering with 7:57 remaining in the half.

Art Kell, who scored 14 goals in only eight games last season before suffering a broken foot, recorded a key goal by bouncing one past Palesky with 3:07 left to give UMass a 5-3 lead at intermission.

UMass midfielder Anthony Biscardi scored the only goal of the third period while the Minutemen had a man-up. Fleming registered his second goal of the game early in the fourth quarter to stretch the advantage to 7-3.

UMass continued to play solid defense in the fourth quarter, holding Army most of the quarter. With 3:24 left, Army took Palesky out of the net. Boltus scored to make it 7-4, but with Palesky not in the net, Will Manny scored an easy goal to stretch the lead to four. Army added a meaningless goal late in the game.

"I was really happy with the way we played on offense even though we scored eight goals," Cannella said. "Typically if you score eight goals, you're not going to win the game in college lacrosse. Their goalie was outstanding. We missed the cage a bunch. We doubled up on them in shots (50-22). Hopefully, we can cash in on them a little bit more, you take 50 shots, you ought to score at least 15 goals."

The Minutmen defense did a terrific job on holding down Army attacks Garrett Thul and Boltus. The defense is led by junior Tom Celentani.

Fleming scored two goals for UMass, including the first goal of the game.

"It was all emotion I'd say," Fleming said. "I have to attribute most of it to my teammates. They sort of pushed me all week.

"I never scored two goals in a college game, but at the same time I could have had two more."

Celentani said that he prepared for his assignment this week by covering freshman Matt Whippen in practice. Whippen is 6 foot 2, 225 pounds.

"Our offense was great, we got shots off at will pretty much," McCormack said.

UMass is at Hartford next Saturday.

We come to you today from Amherst, Massachusetts for the season opener between the Army Black Knights and the UMass Minutemen. It is cloudy with temperatures in the mid-30's while snowbanks line the sidelines.

The Black Knights enter the game as the 13th ranked team by Inside Lacrosse after going 11-6 and a perfect 6-0 in the Patriot League during the 2010 season. They had an amazing first round victory over Syracuse in the first round of the tournament in double OT before bowing to Cornell in the NCAA Quarterfinals. They return four of their top five scorers from last season led by Jeremy Boltus (29 G, 38 A, 67 PTs). They also return starting goalie Tom Palesky who started all 17 games last season with a save percentage of .556 and a GAA of 9.32.

UMass enter the game as the 17th ranked squad in the country after going 8-6 overall with a 4-3 mark in CAA play. They return four of their top five scorers from last season led by sophomore Will Manny who has 27 goals, 18 assists while scoring 45 points. Starting goalie Tim McCormack is back as he started all 14 games with a save percentage of .523 with a 10.13 GAA.

This should be an excellent game today as these two teams are meeting for the first time since the 1998 season in which the Minutemen won 10-4.
