Republican: Gillette Crowd Approaching 30,000

The business goals of Saturday's Colonial Clash seem sure to be reached. All that remains for the University of Massachusetts football team is the not-so-small goal of beating New Hampshire at Gillette Stadium.

The first college game at the stadium in Foxborough looks almost certain to draw more than 25,000 fans. UMass athletic director John McCutcheon deemed the project a success.

"If we got between 25,000 and 30,000, we'd be very pleased. That looks to be about where we'll be at.''

The largest crowd ever to watch UMass play another Football Championship Subdivision school is 23,454 for the 2006 NCAA semifinal at Montana. That seems sure to be surpassed.

AMHERST - The business goals of Saturday's Colonial Clash seem sure to be reached.

All that remains for the University of Massachusetts football team is the not-so-small goal of beating New Hampshire at Gillette Stadium.

The first college game at the stadium in Foxborough looks almost certain to draw more
than 25,000 fans. UMass athletic director John McCutcheon deemed the project a success.

"When we sat down for this, our tentative goal was to get at least 20,000, and we'd be pretty happy,'' McCutcheon said Friday.

"If we got between 25,000 and 30,000, we'd be very pleased. That looks to be about where we'll be at.''

Last week against Richmond, UMass drew 16,421 to McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
The 14th largest home crowd in school history will still be only 55 to 60 percent of what is
expected at Gillette, based on advance sales.

The largest crowd ever to watch UMass play another Football Championship Subdivision school is 23,454 for the 2006 NCAA semifinal at Montana. That seems sure to be
surpassed.

And, since this game is technically New Hampshire's home contest, the turnout will dwarf the capacity of 8,000-seat Cowell Stadium in Durham, N.H.

UMass will be the designated home team for the second year of the teams' two-year
deal at Gillette in 2011.
