Carmelo Anthony was asked which Nugget is surprising him in camp, and he named someone that many didn't even know was in camp. His answer: "Gary Forbes."
The former UMass standout was signed as a free-agent invitee -- which, in basketball terms, is "a camp body." But the versatile 6-foot-7 Forbes has refused to be relegated to such a role. The guy is fighting for a roster spot.
"He's come in and played well," said coach George Karl, who believed that Forbes was a first-round talent who slipped because of his medical record, notably his diabetes.
Karl has not determined his rotation for the preseason games (the first one is Friday), but it's possible Forbes could get some playing time, because Karl said he's going to rest guard Chauncey Billups, who played a lot for Team USA this summer, in half of the games. "Forbes is a wing guy who can play point guard, shooting guard and small forward," Karl said. "He's a scorer and also a pretty good defender. He's up and down the court a lot."
