In the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Matt Vautour reports on Javorn Farrell's ankle injury.

"It's a bad high ankle sprain," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "I was hoping it would be something where he could come back quick, but it ballooned up pretty quickly."

Versatile Farrell suffers bad sprain

AMHERST - As his teammates warmed up for Thursday afternoon's practice at Curry Hicks Cage, University of Massachusetts sophomore Javorn Farrell could only watch as he limped out of the corner locker room.

Farrell, who was wearing a walking boot on his right leg, suffered a high ankle sprain in practice Tuesday.

"It's a bad high ankle sprain," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "I was hoping it would be something where he could come back quick, but it ballooned up pretty quickly."

Kellogg wasn't sure how long Farrell would be out of action. Farrell will miss the Minutemen's controlled scrimmage against Harvard on Sunday, and his status for Thursday's exhibition game against Brandeis is uncertain. Kellogg hopes to have him back for UMass' season opener against Rider on Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mullins Center.

Farrell has struggled to stay healthy since the end of the 2009-10 season. He battled a back injury over the summer and has been in and out of preseason practice.

"He was out with a toe injury. He came back and practiced for three or four days and now he's out with something that looks like it could linger for a while. It's been a tough preseason," Kellogg said. "I'm really hoping he'll be back for Rider."

Farrell, who played every position except center at some point last year, averaged 4.6 points and 3.6 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game. He started 13 of the 29 games he appeared in. Kellogg said the Minutemen miss more than Farrell's play. "Not having him in practice hurts the level of practice. He's maybe our most valuable player," Kellogg said.

FORBES DEBUTS - Former Minuteman Gary Forbes made his debut for the Denver Nuggets Wednesday night. He had three points and three rebounds in five minutes.
