has a story on Gary Forbes and his invite to the Denver Nuggets training camp.
Another former UMass basketball player has received an invitation to an NBA training camp. Last week it was Stephane Lasme joining Tony Gaffney with the Boston Celtics, now it is Gary Forbes being invited to the Denver Nuggets camp. Forbes will be a long shot to make the roster, but with the Nuggets only having 12 players under contract, it is not beyond the realm of possibility.
Forbes transferred to UMass from Virginia after the 2004-05 season and was the leading scorer on the UMass team that went to the NIT championship game in 2008. After UMass, Forbes played one season in the NBA D-League, splitting the season between the Sioux Falls Skyforce and the Tulsa 66ers. Since his stint in the D-League, Forbes has been playing abroad, seeing time in Israel, Italy, Venezuela and the Philippines. He has also participated in the NBA summer league each of the last two summers, most recently for the Houston Rockets.
The Nuggets did not limit their invitations to the former UMass product. Also earning an invitation to camp were Courtney Sims and Shane Edwards. The Nuggets roster is in a current state of flux due to Carmelo Anthony's desire to play in a larger market. The chances of any of the three invitees making the roster will depend on what the Nuggets do with Anthony. In order to meet the NBA salary cap requirements of a trade, another team would most likely need to send the Nuggets multiple players to equal Anthony's salary, which could cause a numbers crunch for Forbes.
